Final Fantasy Versus XIII
There is nothing either good or bad,
but thinking makes it so.
- William Shakespeare
An isolated nation protected by an ancient line of kings.
A modern civilization alive with
the Crystal’s songs of swords and sorcery.
A lone kingdom fighting to forestall
the outer world from imposing its heretic order.
The struggle for the final Crystal is
merely a prologue to the chronicles of a new era.
Final Fantasy Versus XIII is a Playstation 3 game which makes up a part of the Fabula
Nova Crystallis: Final Fantasy XIII compilation. Looking at it, it looks like the dark side of Final Fantasy XIII. However, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is not a sequel, but a who independent storyline. They are related however, by influence of the crystals; powerful force which evidently can destroy countries and manipulate people.
The battle system is being developed by the same development team as Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. Tetsuya Nomura has stated that he is trying to make the battle scenes much like we have seen in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. He has also stated that it will not just be a recycled version of the Kingdom Hearts battle system, but something new. However this early into development, he says, it still looks like a more “realistic” version of Kingdom Hearts.
The story
, as far, follows a royal prince fighting to protect a crystal and trying to prevent the force attacking his city and stealing the crystal. The city he lives in, and perhaps rules, has a very dark, gothic look to it. Tetsuya Nomura has mentioned that in terms of technology, Final Fantasy Versus XIII is aimed to be set in present day, but obviously with a lot more fantasy added in. The city which is shown in the trailer is not an example of other cities worldwide. Outside this city are other cities which look as though they’re still in the middle ages. This is due to the war over the crystals. The other cities focused their technology more on weapons and the cold the war and let their development of their cities and civilisation slip.
We know the crystals are powerful, but what we don’t know is why they’re so
desired. In the E3 2006 trailer, the main character (who is yet to be named) calmly walks down a staircase and prepares himself to take on 100+ guards to defend the crystal. In the TGS 2006 trailer, we see him fighting them off with ease and slowly walking back to his palace and sitting on this throne again. He seems to posses the ability to telekinetically, or otherwise, controls a total of 11 swords which spin around him and can block incoming bullets. You can read more on the character here and more on the weapons here.
